'Ohia lehua is remarkably significant to the Hawaiian culture, serving as a representation for Pele's sister Hi'iaka, and thus is a major proponent in hula, and carries with it quite a few legends. In recent years it's been subjected to Rapid 'Ohia Death or ROD due to an infection getting in through damaged bark.
 
While research is being done to cure and rescue the remaining and undamaged plants, the hula community has been extremely careful and often adapted their adornments so as to preserve the flowers they hold so dear.
